Lafayette Attorney on the Road Less Traveled to Litigation

Featured: Jared Nelson

Before practicing law as a Lafayette, LA, attorney at Galloway Johnson Tompkins Burr & Smith,  Associate Jared Nelson did not follow the traditional path to litigation. Instead, he built a flourishing career rooted in public service. After earning his undergraduate degree and moving to Louisiana, Jared worked as a non-profit case manager before serving as a state probation and parole office – a position that allowed him to advocate for individuals navigating the justice system and work alongside judges and attorneys across Louisiana.

These formative experiences shaped his approach to the legal profession: strategic, empathetic, and grounded in real-world perspective. Jared focuses his practice on workers’ compensation, delivering results-driven representation to businesses and insurers across Louisiana.

As a Lafayette, LA, attorney, Jared builds relationships based on trust and communication, with a strong dedication to rooting partnerships in respect, diversity, and success. His meticulous, detail-oriented services deliver exceptional value and confidence to his clients, knowing that they have partnered with a formidable litigator, trusted legal advisor, and business partner.

Reflecting on his unconventional and distinctive journey to the law, Jared was recently featured in the 2025 Super Lawyers Louisiana magazine in addition to being named a Rising Star in General Litigation.

Working in his probation role from 5 a.m. to 1 p.m. before heading to law classes in full uniform, his nontraditional route to law school presented challenges he overcame with grit, passion, and dedication. He told Super Lawyers, “As a part-time student, I didn’t have the privilege of clerkships, externships or fellowships, or to be a summer clerk who was then hired by the firm. I gave myself no choice but to excel in law school and find a good job that way.”

Jared ultimately graduated third in his class, and after a stint as an Associate AG in the Office of the Attorney General and another private firm, he has found his professional home at Galloway.
